I think I have a counterfeit banknote. What should I do?
If you think you may have come into the possession of a counterfeit banknote, it is advised to proceed as follows:
- either present the banknote to the counters of the BCL, situated on 43 avenue Monterey (open to the public from Monday to Friday, from 10:30am to 04:00pm);
- or hand it in to the police and in the case the counterfeit is confirmed, file a complaint;
- or hand the banknote back to your retail bank who will then send it to the central bank for examination.
The banknote will be analysed by competent experts of the central bank of Luxembourg and, if proven authentic, you will be given your money back.
In most cases, the careful examination of a banknote allows its recognition as authentic. In fact, many security devices protect the euro banknotes. In regard to this subject, you can find information on euro banknotes' security features here.
