The BCL's missions

According to the BCL's organic law, « the main task of the BCL shall be to participate in the execution of the tasks of the ESCB with a view to achieving its objectives ».

Basic tasks to be carried out by the ESCB, as laid down by the Treaty, are:
To define and implement monetary policy; To conduct foreign exchange operations; To hold and manage the official foreign reserves of the Member States; To promote the smooth operation of payment systems.

Other tasks the BCL is involved in are:
To contribute to financial stability; To issue euro banknotes; To compile statistics; To do research and publish its results; To cooperate on an international level; To provide services to the State and to individuals.
