Evolution of credit institutions’ balance sheet
The Banque centrale du Luxembourg informs that, based on preliminary data, the aggregated balance sheet of credit institutions reached 838 659 million euros on 30 November 2019, compared to 828 573 million euros on 31 October 2019, an increase of 1.2%. Between the months of November 2018 and November 2019, the aggregated balance sheet increased by 7.5%.
Net interbank lending, that is to say the difference between interbank loans and deposits, increased by 3 239 million (2.0%) to reach 165 004 million euros at the end of November 2019.
Loans to resident non-bank customers increased by 1 522 million euros, or 1.6%, between October 2019 and November 2019. Between November 2018 and November 2019, these loans increased by 5 944 million euros (6.5%).
The progression of loans to resident non-bank customers was largely attributable to its three main components. Indeed, between November 2018 and November 2019, loans to non-financial corporations (NFCs) rose by 2 230 million euros (8.5%), loans for house purchases by 2 614 million euros (8.7%) and loans to other financial intermediaries (OFIs) by 1 040 million euros (3.7%).
With regard to the liability side, deposits from the resident non-bank sector increased by 5 309 million euros or 2.1% between 31 October 2019 and 30 November 2019. On an annual basis, these deposits increased by 12 479 million euros, or 5.0%.
Between November 2018 and November 2019, deposits from the OFI sector (which had a share of 68.7% as at 30 November 2019 and comprised deposits made by monetary and non-monetary investment funds) increased by 4 696 million euros (2.7%) and resident household deposits by 4 945 million euros (13.0%). Resident NFC deposits rose by a mere 63 million euros (0.4%).
