Evolution of credit institutions’ balance sheet
The Banque centrale du Luxembourg informs that, based on preliminary data, the aggregated balance sheet of credit institutions reached 844 532 million euros on 31 January 2020, compared to 815 054 million euros on 31 December 2019, an increase of 3.6%. Between the months of January 2019 and January 2020, the aggregated balance sheet increased by 7.1%.
Net interbank lending, that is to say the difference between interbank loans and deposits, increased by 351 million (0.2%) to reach 161 906 million euros at the end of January 2020.
Loans to resident non-bank customers increased by 1 184 million euros, or 1.2%, between December 2019 and January 2020. Between January 2019 and January 2020, these loans increased by 7 068 million euros (7.7%).
The progression of loans to resident non-bank customers was largely attributable to its three main components. Indeed, between January 2019 and January 2020, loans to non-financial corporations (NFCs) rose by 1 611 million euros (6.1%), loans for house purchases by 2 669 million euros (8.7%) and loans to other financial intermediaries (OFIs) by 2 564 million euros (9.1%).
With regard to the liability side, deposits from the resident non-bank sector increased by 3 636 million euros or 1.4% between December 2019 and January 2020. On an annual basis, these deposits increased by 13 745 million euros, or 5.6%.
Between January 2019 and January 2020, OFI deposits (which had a share of 69.9% as at 31 January 2020 and comprised deposits made by monetary and non-monetary investment funds) increased by 13 745 million euros (5.6%) and household deposits by 2 206 million euros (5.6%). Resident NFC deposits decreased by 890 million euros (5.3%).
