Evolution of credit institutions’ balance sheet
The Banque centrale du Luxembourg informs that, based on preliminary data, the aggregated balance sheet of credit institutions reached 876 733 million euros on 30 April 2020, compared to 901 641 million euros on 31 March 2020, a decrease of 2.8%. Between the months of April 2019 and April 2020, the aggregated balance sheet increased by 8.0%.
Net interbank lending, that is to say the difference between interbank loans and deposits, decreased by 23 383 million euros (13.1%) to reach 154 823 million euros at the end of April 2020.
Loans to resident non-bank customers decreased by 1 196 million euros, or 1.2%, between March 2020 and April 2020. Between April 2019 and April 2020, these loans increased by 7 580 million euros (8.1%).
The progression of loans to resident non-bank customers was largely attributable to its three main components. Indeed, between April 2019 and April 2020, loans to non-financial corporations (NFCs) rose by 3 296 million euros (12.5%), loans for house purchases by 2 579 million euros (8.3%) and loans to other financial intermediaries (OFIs) by 1 286 million euros (4.4%).
With regard to the liability side, deposits from the resident non-bank sector decreased by 11 115 million euros or 4.0% between March 2020 and April 2020. On an annual basis, these deposits increased by 18 844 million euros, or 7.6%.
Between April 2019 and April 2020, OFI deposits (which had a share of 68.8% as at 30 April 2020 and comprised deposits made by monetary and non-monetary investment funds) increased by 13 737 million euros (8.1%) and household deposits by 2 154 million euros (5.4%). Resident NFC deposits decreased by 1 098 million euros (5.9%).
