International investment position at the end of 2023
Compared to the third quarter of 2023, Luxembourg’s external financial assets decreased by 55 billion euros, reaching 11 668 billion euros at the end of the fourth quarter of 2023. External financial liabilities decreased similarly, reaching 11 641 billion euros for this period. Luxembourg’s net external position, thus, is estimated at 27 billion euros at the end of 2023.
The amount outstanding in direct investments assets decreased by 213 billion euros reaching 4 655 billion euros at the end of December 2023, essentially having undergone disinvestments (145 billion euros). The amount outstanding in direct investments liabilities reached down to 3 740 billion euros at the end of the fourth quarter of 2023, decreasing also by 213 billion euros due to negative transactions (disinvestments of 122 billion euros).
Driven by the rise in financial markets, the amount outstanding in portfolio investments assets reached 5 308 billion euros, i.e. an increase of 176.5 billion euros, mainly due to revaluation effects (175 billion euros). The amount outstanding in portfolio investments liabilities reached up 6 459 billion euros, which represents an increase of 171 billion euros compared to the previous quarter.
For other investments, the amount outstanding in assets reached down 1 475 billion euros at the end of December 2023, after having decreased by 15 billion euros. The amount outstanding in liabilities stabilized compared to the previous quarter (+4 billion euros), reaching 1 256 billion euros at the end of fourth quarter of 2023.
