Evolution of credit institutions’ balance sheet

The Banque centrale du Luxembourg informs that, based on preliminary data, the aggregated balance sheet of credit institutions reached 961 533 million euros on 30 September 2024, compared to 941 851 million euros on 31 August 2024, an increase of 2.09%.

On the assets side, this increase is due mostly to the monthly increase of loans to deposit taking corporations and other assets. On the liabilities side, it is mainly due to deposits from deposit taking corporations and other liabilities. On an annual basis, the aggregated balance sheet increased by 1.39%.

Net interbank lending, i.e. the difference between interbank loans and deposits, decreased by 5 082 million euros, or 2.22%, to reach 223 734 million euros at the end of September 2024.

Loans to resident non-bank customers decreased by 107 million euros, or 0.09%, between August 2024 and September 2024. Over twelve months, these loans have increased by 595 million euros, or 0.53%.

On a yearly basis, loans to non-financial corporations (NFCs) decreased by 2 317 million euros (or 8.2%), loans for house purchases decreased by 192 million euros (or 0.46%) and loans to other financial intermediaries (OFIs) increased by 2 510 million euros (or 7.01%).

With regard to the liability side, deposits from the resident non-bank sector have retracted by 3 913 million euros, or 1.35%, between August 2024 and September 2024. Over twelve months, these deposits increased by 10 403 million euros, or 3.77%.

Between September 2023 and September 2024, Other financial intermediaries (OFI) deposits (which had a share of 67.2% as at 30 September 2024 and comprised deposits made up by monetary and non-monetary investment funds) increased by 5 976 million euros (or 3.21%) and household deposits progressed by 1 249 million euros (or 2.77%). NFC deposits increased by 2 227 million euros (or 10.48%) and deposits from the other sectors1 progressed by 951 million euros (or 4.11%).
