International investment position at the third quarter of 2024
Compared to the second quarter of 2024, Luxembourg’s external financial assets increased by 21.7 billion euros, reaching 12 363 billion euros at the end of the third quarter of 2024. External financial liabilities increased similarly, reaching 12 332 billion euros for this period. Luxembourg’s international investment position, amounted to 31 billion euros at the end of September 2024, is stabilizing relative to the second quarter of 2024.
The outstanding amount in direct investments assets and liabilities remained stable and reached respectively 4 738 billion euros and 3 768 billion euros. These results are essentially related to negative price and exchange rate effects.
Driven by the rise in financial markets, the outstanding amount in portfolio investments assets reached 5 804 billion euros, i.e. an increase of 101 billion euros, mainly due to positive revaluation and price effects (68 billion euros), the rest being associated to 33 billion euros of investments. Likewise, the amount outstanding in portfolio investments liabilities reached 7 007 billion euros at the end of September 2024, which represents an increase of 111 billion euros. This increase is mainly due to 91 billion euros of positive transactions and, to a lesser extent, to 20 billion euros of price and change effects.
Lastly, the outstanding amount in assets regarding other investments reached 1 567 billion euros at the end of September 2024, which remain stable compared to the previous quarter. The amount outstanding in liabilities increased vis-à-vis the previous quarter (27.6 billion euros), reaching 1 338 billion euros at the end of the third quarter of 2024.
