Evolution of credit institutions’ balance sheet
The Banque centrale du Luxembourg informs that, based on preliminary data, the aggregated balance sheet of credit institutions reached 957 878 million euros on 31 December 2024, compared to 972 277 million euros on 30 November 2024, a decrease of 1.48%. On the assets side, this increase is due mostly to the increase in securities holdings. On the liabilities side, it is due to deposits from the other sectors. On an annual basis, the aggregated balance sheet increased by 1.17%.
Net interbank lending, i.e. the difference between interbank loans and deposits, decreased by 1 963 million euros, or 0.85 %, to reach 229 382 million euros at the end of December 2024.
Loans to resident non-bank customers decreased by 319 million euros, or 0.28 %, between November 2024 and December 2024. Over twelve months, these loans have increased by 973 million euros, or 0.87 %.
On a yearly basis, loans to non-financial corporations (NFCs) decreased by 3 605 million euros (or 13 %), loans for house purchases increased by 312 million euros (or 0.76 %) and loans to other financial intermediaries (OFIs) increased by 4 661 million euros (or 13.17 %).
With regard to the liability side, deposits from the resident non-bank sector have retracted by 2 177 million euros, or 0.75 %, between November 2024 and December 2024. Over twelve months, these deposits increased by 18 538 million euros, or 6.86 %.
Between December 2023 and December 2024, Other financial intermediaries (OFI) deposits (which had a share of 66.2 % as at 31 December 2024 and comprised deposits made up by monetary and non-monetary investment funds) increased by 13 544 million euros (or 7.63 %) and household deposits progressed by 2 071 million euros (or 4.56 %). NFC deposits increased by 1 069 million euros (or 4.42%) and deposits from the other sectors[1] progressed by 1 854 million euros (or 8.01 %).
