Evolution of credit institutions’ balance sheet
The Banque centrale du Luxembourg informs that, based on preliminary data, the aggregated balance sheet of credit institutions reached 980 840 million euros on 28 February 2025, compared to 969 410 million euros on 31 January 2025, an increase of 1.18%.
On the assets side, this increase is due mostly to the monthly increase of loans to other banks and deposit-taking corporations. On the liabilities side, it is due to deposits from other sectors. On an annual basis, the aggregated balance sheet increased by 4.37%.
Net interbank lending, i.e. the difference between interbank loans and deposits, increased by 2 934 million euros, or 1.24%, to reach 240 333 million euros at the end of February 2025.
Loans to resident non-bank customers increased by 86 million euros, or 0.08%, between January 2025 and February 2025. Over twelve months, these loans have increased by 1 563 million euros, or 1.38%.
On a yearly basis, loans to non-financial corporations (NFCs) decreased by 4 564 million euros (or 16.34%), loans for house purchases increased by 252 million euros (or 0.62%) and loans to other financial intermediaries (OFIs) increased by 6 330 million euros (or 17.16%).
With regard to the liability side, deposits from the resident non-bank sector have progressed by 4 228 million euros, or 1.42%, between January 2025 and February 2025. Over twelve months, these deposits increased by 31 823 million euros, or 11.77%.
Between February 2024 and February 2025, Other financial intermediaries (OFI) deposits (which had a share of 67.0% as at 28 February 2025 and comprised deposits made up by monetary and non-monetary investment funds) increased by 23 846 million euros (or 13.36%) and household deposits progressed by 1 653 million euros (or 3.59%). NFC deposits increased by 3 072 million euros (or 13.34%) and deposits from the other sectors[1] progressed by 3 252 million euros (or 14.3%).
